If you wish to direct a domain name that you have to a different domain address or subdomain, one of the ways to do this would be to use a CNAME record. By setting up such a record, the domain name being redirected loses all of its records (A, MX, and so on) and instead, it takes the A record of the domain name it's redirected to. This way, if you use a web design service by some company that gives you a subdomain, you can use an actual domain and not only will it be pointed to the site that you have set up, but it will also be displayed in the Internet browser address bar at all times. Other possible uses of a CNAME record are to point all the visitors from different subdomains to their main Internet domain, or to use the webmail service of your hosting provider by using webmail.your-doman.com, for example. The latter will work only by creating a CNAME record for a subdomain simply because such a record created for the main domain address renders it impossible to use email addresses.

CNAME Records in Web Hosting

Creating a CNAME record through our web hosting service is quite easy. Our in-house built Hepsia CP includes a section dedicated to the DNS records of your domain addresses, so you can set up a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted within your account in only a few easy steps. There is also a video tutorial within the same section where you can see the process first-hand. This feature provides you with a variety of possibilities - if you create a company site on our end, for example, the employees can use their e-mails with the company domain address, not with the address of our mail server. If you choose to create an Internet site by using a different company which offers online web design services, you can easily forward a domain name hosted here and use it for the website. Last, but not least, in case you have an online store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you are able to create a CNAME record for the www subdomain and redirect it to the main domain address, so all your visitors are going to be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

Managing DNS records usually seems to be a difficult task to the people with less experience, but the Hepsia hosting Control Panel, which comes with every semi-dedicated service which we provide, is quite easy to use. If you wish to set up a CNAME record for any purpose, all you will need to do will be to select the domain address or subdomain that you need, select the type of record, which will be CNAME in this case, then type the value i.e. the domain name or subdomain you are forwarding to. The procedure is quite simple and you can create the record in the DNS Records section of the Control Panel. Within the hour the new record will be 100 % active and within several hours it's going to propagate worldwide. If you are not sure what you should do, we have prepared a detailed help article and a short video tutorial concerning how to go about creating a CNAME record and they are both located in that same section of Hepsia. Naturally, you can also get in touch with us for help whenever you want.
